As an illustrator and animator, I recently created an explainer video about the fascinating history of the World Cup, featuring a range of political events that have impacted this beloved international soccer competition.
The World Cup’s rich history began in 1958 when Sweden hosted the event, drawing massive global attention. In 1966, England won their first and only World Cup title, marking a significant moment in the country’s history.
However, the World Cup has not been without its controversies. In 1966, the iconic Jules Rimet trophy was stolen from an exhibition in London and later found by a dog named Pickles. Additionally, there have been allegations of doping, such as in the case of West Germany in the 1970s.
In 1974, the World Cup was held in the western section of Germany, and it is remembered for the surprise victory of the host team against the Netherlands in the final. The 1986 World Cup in Mexico also had a memorable moment, when Maradona scored the famous ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in the Azteca Stadium during the semi-finals.
Outside of soccer, the Falklands War between Argentina and Britain in 1982 also had an impact on the World Cup. Argentina’s victory in the 1986 World Cup was celebrated by many as a way to lift the nation’s spirits after the conflict.
In 1998, the Iranian team faced off against the American team in Lyon, France. This game was significant because it was the first time that the two nations had played each other since the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
As an animator and illustrator, I created this explainer video with sound effects, highlighting these exciting moments in the history of the World Cup. I hope this video provides an entertaining and informative insight into the world’s most beloved soccer competition.
