This artwork is inspired by a beautiful verse from the Quran (Surah An-Nur 24:35) that speaks of the divine light which guides the heavens and the earth. I chose to paint a lantern on this live edge wood slab to represent this profound concept, where the lantern becomes a metaphor for divine illumination. The rustic wood and bark edges evoke the essence of the ‘blessed tree’ mentioned in the verse, adding to the piece’s organic, spiritual feel. It’s a reminder that divine light shines from within and reflects outwards, touching everything around it.

The translation of the verse:
“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within a glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.”
(Surah An-Nur 24:35)
