Ever since moving to the USA, I’ve been amazed by the incredible variety of beetles here. Some are huge! Inspired by these fascinating creatures, I decided to create a 3D animated robot beetle using Blender, the free 3D modeling software.
I was watching a robot modeling tutorial when the idea struck. I spent hours in Blender meticulously modeling every detail of the beetle robot, from the gears and body to the lithium battery. To bring it to life, I used After Effects for compositing and Premiere Pro for sound design.
One of the biggest challenges was motion tracking. Originally, I planned to film the robot beetle interacting with a car. However, the car’s shiny surface proved too difficult to track, even with markers. I learned a valuable lesson about planning for different scenarios and adapted by filming on asphalt instead.
This project was a fantastic learning experience, especially when it came to motion tracking. It pushed my skills as a motion graphics artist and 3D animator.
